Creating a Will: The Foundation of Your Estate Plan

Creating a Will: The Foundation of Your Estate Plan

Most of us are busy with the day to day and not really thinking about what happens to our family when there is an unexpected emergency? Sometimes it takes something close to home, like a neighbor whose husband passes away suddenly, to bring those questions into focus. We cannot prepare for every possibility, but we can take steps to make things easier for the people we love.

This is the purpose of a “Will”, a legal document that gives you a chance to put your wishes in writing and start a conversation with your family while you have the time to do it together. Basically, a Will clearly states your wishes from what happens to your property, business interest, treasured belongings, and how you want to provide for your children.

Creating a Will lets you select an Executor. This is the person responsible for handling your estate by paying outstanding bills and carrying out your instructions. If you have minor children, you can also name the person you would want to care for them.

Also, one important thing to note, if you live in Georgia, you should know that without a valid Will, Georgia law determines which relatives inherit property that passes through your estate.

Basically, creating a will is an act of care. It gives you a chance to decide what matters, put your wishes in writing, and make the next steps clearer for the people you love.

A Will is the foundation of an estate plan because it provides a starting point. Other documents may also be needed to address medical decisions, financial matters, and assets that pass directly to a named beneficiary.
